A new automatic (MDK) Aisin-Warner A6-AF40 transmission was added with the 2014 Turbo Diesel Cruze:

A new manual (MR5) transmission was added for the LT models. Notice the top gear artios (3rd thru 6th) are the same as in the MZ0 transmission.

so of the two MH8 alxe ratios, one will be a bit quicker off the line and one will be better on gas?

Yes. the original 3.87:1 axle ratio will be quicker than the new 3.53:1 axle-ratio, but the new 3.53:1 axle-ratio will get better highway milage...proportedly 2 MPG better.
