The "new" (in europe) 1.7L turbo diesel has the promised MPG numbers but is yet unproven, while the "current / old" 2.0L turbo diesel has a proven reliability and reputation, but it's MPG numbers aren't UP to what GM is promising. My guess it'll come down to whichever of the two is easiest to certify to the new, more stringent, EPA & CARB emission requirements.

Newest "rumor" still has it being a 2.0L VCDi turbo-diesel engine, with a 700 mile range from a 14 gallon fuel tank....hm-m-m-m, that's 50 MPG!

The 2014 Chevrolet Cruze Diesel: What We Know | GM Authority

...addendum: pre-production in August 2012, full production in 2Q 2013.

MPG. 50 NONSENSE: I have the Cruze/Daewoo Lacetti 2.0 VCDI auto for past two years and current combined mpg Town & Highway over the last two tankfuls of Shell V power Diesel got me 27.8 mpg although inaccurate mpg Display showed up to 44 mpg. 50 mpg is a LIE.

...whether it's "propaganda" or just "marketing-hype," GM is still touting 50 MPG from an automatic ECO-diesel for the EPA highway test...we'll see.
